HISTORY
Almost a few decades ago, colposcopy was a small part of Gynecology and Obstetrics, which was practiced only by few gynecologists. Even then, the quality of Serbian colposcopy was at a high level, because it was ruled by the great men of that time, who introduced this method long before it was recognized in numerous more developed countries in Europe.
In our country, the first article "The importance of colposcopy in gynecological diagnostics" was published in 1954 by Berislav Berić, a student of Vespi, Mestwerdt and Hinselman. Štucinova and Broćić were pioneers in the introduction of colposcopy in our country. Colposcopy was first practiced in the large clinics of former Yugoslavia, and then very quickly it was introduced in smaller hospital and outpatient facilities throughout the country. At that time in Yugoslavia even the valued binocular colposcopic devices "Soča" were produced. Today, colposcopy is the widely accepted method for early detection of premalignant and malignant changes in the cervix.
Colposcopy is one of the few methods that has not been improved since its inception. Today there are new, more modern models of colposcope, but the principle of the method remained the same. However, the knowledge about pathology of the cervix, the mechanisms of changes, and the importance of examining the other parts of the lower genital system has expanded significantly. As a result, in the younger generations, the need has matured to develop this area more, to get its own place and a professional association that would deal with the problems of the field that is developing rapidly and becoming more and more important.
After many attempts and the special efforts of Professor Branko Stanimirović, who at that time was the General Secretary of the Yugoslav Association for Gynecology and Obstetrics (UGOJ), the Section for colposcopy and cervical pathology was formed. during the meeting in Brezovica, on September 26, 1995.
With the changes in society that happened in the following years, this Section adopted a new Statute at the Assembly held on November 12, 2006. Year and grew into the Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology of Serbia.
Since then, the Society has been working continuously, gathering all lovers of colposcopy, expanding horizons, educating colleagues and emphasizing the importance of colposcopy.
