WHAT IS COLPOSCOPY?

Colposcopy is a diagnostic method that allows for a detailed examination of the surface of the lower genital organs, which includes the cervix, vaginal walls, vulva, perineum, and perianal area. Adequate lighting and appropriate magnification, achieved through the use of a special device – the colposcope, are necessary for this procedure.

Colposcopy is necessary for all women who have an abnormal screening test result for cervical cancer (cytological result - Pap test and/or HPV test) or those who have a clinically suspicious cervix. It must also be systematically performed before treatment in cases of suspected or confirmed precancerous changes.

OBJECTIVES OF COLPOSCOPY

  • to assess the findings on the cervix, vagina, vulva, and perianal epithelium and to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings
  • to determine the precise location of the change and enable the collection of an appropriate sample for histological examination
  • to enable monitoring of changes for which surgical treatment is not necessary
  • to facilitate the treatment of precancerous changes
  • to recognize or exclude invasive carcinoma

The colposcopic examination is not painful. During the examination, a mild solution of acetic acid and a solution of iodine (Lugol's solution) are applied. After the examination, the doctor informs the patient about the findings and the further plan of action.
